How do you build your own electric vehicle via Do It Yourself (DIY) for your home garage? For the last couple of month, the biggest challenge faced by many car owners is rising gasoline price. Due to the limited crude oil supply, gas prices will go up and down and that has caused considerable amount of stress for drivers around the world. The situation is worst in America because an average household has more than one car. One solution to removed our dependency on fossil fuel is to adopt the concept of electric vehicle (EV) for the masses. Unfortunately, the current models of EV are expensive. To enjoy the benefits of an electric car, one can convert their gasoline driven car to run purely on electricity from their home garage.
The electric car conversion process is actually quite simple. What we want is to take out the internal combustion engine and replace it with a DC electric motor. The power for the motor will be supplied by a series of lead acid flooded batteries. Since the engine is gone, all its connecting parts such as gas tank, fuel lines, exhaust pipe and radiator are redundant and to be removed as well. The existing drive train can still be used and the electric motor is connected to the transmission with a customized connector plate.
If you are not familiar with car engineering, building your own electric vehicle may not be a good idea. You can either ask a friend with some car maintenance skill to assist you or send your car to a professional workshop to be retrofitted. What you will need to do is to acquire some basic knowledge of the science of an electric car. With some information, you will get the best deal from the mechanic and know how or where to reduce the cost of the conversion.
